how wrong we were to think that immortality meant never dying

most people that i've talked about this line with don't understand it. "immortality does mean never dying" personally, i think losing someone you really care about helps you understand the lyric. my mom died 11 years ago and i still think of her every day. whenever i think about her, this lyric runs through my head... i was curious what others thought of the lyric (people who don't dismiss it as some emo dude trying to be existential)

Here's my take on this lyrics (it's actually my very favorite line of MCR lyric)

I think it's about feeling like you're dead inside, yet trudging along every day, going through the motions, Breathing in and out, waking and sleeping. It's almost as if you've no reason to live but no reason to die either. It feels like your immortal in a sense that you aren't really LIVING.. merely existing... You're not physically dead.. but inside you are.

I have personally felt that way countless times. That's why its so important of a lyric to me. I related to this meaning.

I take this lyric from a more... literal and less personal meaning, I guess. Immortal, as previously stated in the original post, means never dying. However, if, in that life, you did something. You made an impact, big or small. You changed the world in a much more obvious way, or via The Butterfly Effect. You meant something to others, or you were a great person. And for doing what you did, though you're physically dead, you're never gone. Your influence and memories of you remain, and in that, you are immortal.

Hi, I'm just about to join. XD I just HAD to type all this out first. ;P

i couldn't agree more... i really wanted to try and say what you did, but i couldn't get it out coherently...

To be honest, I'm quite surprised that that came out coherent. XD Usually my writing comes out as a messy blah.
I guess I've just thought about that line a lot.

This is my favorite MCR line. It is getting inked on me somewhere.

Personally to me, it means being so dead inside that you don't think you have anything left to live for. But, dying wouldn't make anything better. You would just be pysically dead, but never dead to the others that were in your life and cared about you. To them, you live and are immortal.

Being dead inside, as previously stated.
Something I found interesting was that my dad thought it referred to fame. Discovering fame isn't what you thought it would be. And taken from that, it can refer to anything: money, friendship, glory, the ability to do anything.

well I think it could either be that there are more than one ways to be immortal, like someone already said. You leave a legacy of some kind, or change someones life and you're remembered forever... even though you did die.

or we all know about their love for zombie flicks and the like. So maybe it's something like, yeah, you're immortal, but you can still feel dead inside. Like Bella in New Moon. *spoiler for New Moon juuust in case you haven't read the books yet. and by the way. HURRY UP THEY ARE AMAZING!* *ahem* anyways, She was so torn up inside after losing Edward that she was virtually dead. She went to school, and work, she cooked, she did her homework but that was it. But losing him did almost kill her in.

oh yeah another incoherent post. i'm amazing at explaining myself. hahaha.

sorry i'm tired. and i just don't feel like trying to fix that blob up there ^^

"or we all know about their love for zombie flicks and the like"

haha, wouldn't it be funny if we were all assigning it a deep meaning and they really just wrote it 'cause they like zombies...

rofl. i could see it happening... I mean, obviously the sympathize with zombies/vampires right? lol. Especially during the bullets era.

This line reminds me of a quote from Saw II:

"What is the cure for cancer, Eric? The cure for death itself. The answer is immortality. By creating a legacy, by living a life worth remembering, you become immortal."
